frogger in regina

This is my blog from 2001 when I was living in Regina, Saskatchewan. When I landed, I had no job, little money and instant bills to pay. Much hilarity ensues...

Fall has hit the Prairies like a giant Super Big Gulp crashing
down on a wasp.
Those that live here knows what means.
People are cheerier, looking forward to the new beginnings
that autumn always brings.
Me, I'm gettin' outta here. Back to my home, Toronto,
still warm and humid according to hometown reports.
Fall here is also marked by the abundance of foreign students
and young people in the city.
Today, I saw gaggles of Asian visa students wandering around
downtown Regina, confused that there was nothing going on.
Weekends in the downtown core is like a civic holiday.
No one's around.
I consider myself quite lucky, I've just been here for four months,
they have to stay here for the entire academic year.

Gearing up for a big Art blowout next week. Full report of the
art scene in Regina. It's not just paintings of grain elevators anymore!
Or....maybe it still is.

The most famous Saskatchewanians:

Gordie Howe
Joni Mitchell
Pamela Wallin
Diefenbaker (?)
Tommy Douglas
The Waltons (Regina?)
Wide Mouth Mason
Colin Thatcher
DICK ASSMAN -from Regina-(15 sec of fame is over--early 90s Dave Letterman)

Here are some typical and Real names of Reginans
I've come across inone way or another:

Wayne and Terri Licking
The Krogstad Family
Doobasoff
Kristal Kups

More to come.......

Hello everybody.
I am very busy these days, getting ready to
leave this place once and for all.
Just finished shooting the breakdance vid.
So I'll be running around, trying to find some
cardboard so 's I can watch it and start practicing.
Och! These old bones of mine. I never did get that
skateboard. No money. But cardboard is free.
You get less shin splints from cardboard than trying to
do a 360 shove-it or an impossible or a vario.
Actually, I'm not sure what the vario is.
D+B how's the baby.

After shooting the breakers, we promptly got kicked out by
stupid Reginan security guards.
Is the gene pool that small here?
At least they didn't confiscate the film.

Does anybody read this?
Hmm. Well I write for myself anyways, so whatever.
I'm not a goth blogger, at least.

Before I leave Regina, I've got to go to Moose Jaw.
To check out the tunnels. Al Capone.

More later.

This here blog is dedicated to my friends in LA,
Dov and Belle. Their cute baby girl Charlotte Eve was born on Friday.
Congrats and happy baby times to you two!
Frogger will be sending rattles and plush things in the
mail soon...

Sunday, September 2

September already!
Where does the time go? Actually, this has been the longest
and hottest and freakiest summer in my life. Maybe not freaky,
just trashy.
Today I was at the Casino. Casino Regina.
I love Casinos. They're so exciting and glamourous. Even in Regina.
Well, maybe not glamourous. I was just thrilled to see a lot of people
gathered in one place. They were mostly seniors (of course).
I played five dollars on the slots and lost it all rather quickly.
They do have a very cheap breakfast that is quite popular with the
folks here. A full breakfast for 1.99. Yummy.
It was the only thing open on a Sunday besides the mall.

Then we walked by the outdoor pedestrian mall downtown and
saw all these Corvettes parked. Great! A car club meeting/exhibition.
But there were no pedestrians. The mall was empty. How boring.
I should mention that, here in Regina, it's like a donut. The downtown
core is completely empty on the weekends. Very tragic.

Regina is sooooo boring sometimes. But hey, ya make do.

How you like the pix?
Does it work? Send feedback.
Today I went to the Regina Dragon Boat Festival.
Man, what a jock fest. There were quite alot of people
but you know they were just office workers dying for a beer.
The announcer constantly made references to beer and drinking.
Jokes like"lion dance" not "line dance". Whatever.
The typical Reginan Dragon Boater is (usually) white, middle aged
and overweight.

We were also treated to some white trash kung fu demonstrations.
Some white girl with feathered "demonstrating" traditional weapons style.
It looked like she was waving some pom poms in the air.

And check out some of the names of these dragon boat teams:

>>The Flying Fokkers
>>Oar Ang A Tang Gang-
>>Cyber Mullets
>>Dragon Our Assets
>>Dragon Our Buns
>>Crouching Rowers, draggin' boat
>>Dragon Our Cookies

Nice.

Also, Ronald McDonald was there. He seemed like the sleaziest Ronald McDonald
ever.
I also got some shots of people doing Tai Chi. It might look funny.

Tonight I saw for the first time, a harvest moon. This occurs early to late fall. As all the chaff
from wheat being cut in the fields pollute the sky and everybody suffers from allergies.
The effect is quite amazing, like the coming of the apocolypse. The sun is rusty orange
and gold. The moon is a hazy, pale, pale gold. Like the world is ending.
It was quite unnerving and beautiful at the same time.

Regina's only link to modern music KISS 92 FM died on Friday.
KISS 92 is a popular Canadian franchise radio station and probably kept teens and
preteens here hip to what was happening elsewhere. Not that they're not able to on their own.
But KISS 92 symbolized civilization (real civilization) to me.
I listened to it in Toronto, and I sometimes listened to it here. Well, actually, I woke up to it.
It was better than the others, at least.
KISS 92 FM is now "adult contempo" (do they still use that anymore?).
The new station is LITE92FM. Are they serious? You bet. I know, sometimes I think I
live in a badly written farce.

It's time to leave.
