frogger in regina

This is my blog from 2001 when I was living in Regina, Saskatchewan. When I landed, I had no job, little money and instant bills to pay. Much hilarity ensues...

Saturday, September 1

Well there you have it.
Pictures. Soon, QuickTime video!
Isn't this frog web-savvy? or what.
I've hastily put up some pictures for your pleasure and enjoyment.
Right now, they're just collages. No explanations or anything.
I really took them. Yep, risked life and limb. Guess which one is me?

Today, I got really homesick again. The temperature here has dropped considerably as well.
One of my boring jobs is to type info into a computer recording applications that
people have sent in from all across Canada. Like most times, I get ones that are from
my stomping ground, Toronto. For some reason, I got really homesick looking at those
apps that had street names that I recognized. Some were even close to where I lived!
I might have passed these people on the street!
As I diligently typed all this in, my mind kept picturing the beautiful streets of Parkdale.
Resplendent in that late summer / early fall light. The warm temperatures, the people on
the street, the ease in which one could get a Roti. Or some Jerk Chicken.
I really miss my home.

Like I was saying, the temperature has dropped. The Saskatchewan Winter is coming.
Brrrr. Hate to talk about the weather, but that's the only thing interesting here.

Yesterday, I bore witness to a potential crime in progress. The buiilding next to ours had
a prowler situation and I saw some kid run out from a dark corner, jump on a bike and
take off. The bike had one of those lights that light up when you peddle!
It's good to know that prowlers here are environmentally conscious.

Now I know I've been here too long. People in certain stores are starting to treat me
like a regular. They say "Hi, how're ya doing, today?" They do the familiar nod.
They talk about the weather.
Yikes! Time to get the fuck outta dodge.

I on the spacing of this ol text and so I'm going to try to make it less like haiku or some sort of strange Saskatchewanian poetry, here goes! Anything
JUST thought I'd change things up a bit, a bit less
crowded more space to read.
I don't have much time left, so I don't know why I
bothered, but here it is. Vers 2, with PIX!

Some people I know back in T.Dot think I'm gonna
stay here, sure!

I just found out that one of my faves, Aaliyah died
tragically in a plane crash on Saturday .
We don't get any newspapers here on Sunday
so I found out today.
Pretty sad (I'm talking about Aaliyah).
Let's have a moment of silence on this blog:

................................................................

Aaliyah. Rest in Peace.
There's something happening with this blogger
server so I lost my last entry: it didn't get posted
and I didn't feel like typing that stuff all over again.
Basically it was about 7-11, fat people and
granny sound asleepin the back seat of a car.
So I hope this gets through to all you
guys out there waiting breathlessly to hear about the
next exciting thing in Regina.

A bit of good news: I'm employed, twice.
And Giant Robot IS available here at some
specialty book store downtown.

So it ain't all bad.

Germans. Germans love to come here, to
"da frontier town off da Canadjan prairee"
They come in droves to live on vacation ranches
that teach you to be a cowboy: ride horses, sleep
under the stars, feed cows, brand cows, etc.
Germans are also fascinated by the natives here
and love to come and "live the aboriginal life".
Hunting, fishing, sleeping in tipis, sweat lodging,
going to powwows.
Germans.

There are two very strange statues here that I
should have mentioned at the very beginning.
Sir John A. Mcdonald and Confucius.
Sir John resides in the park downtown.
Confucius is in front of city hall.
Why? Don't know.
Sir John is holding up a scroll. But it looks like
he's offering the people of Regina a huge
fatty, spliff, joint.
Quite ironic as Reginans are not known
to be laid back at all.
I'll try to get a pix of that joint-proffering John A.
for youse guys.
Yes,yes, yes, pix comin' soon. Just been so
busy, with two jobs and dodging beer bottles
being thrown outta cars.
A couple of nights, I think I heard gun shots.
Nah. Probably just firecrackers.
People here just knife each other to death.

I passed by a really depressing garage sale.
The owner was a VERY young mother sitting
on the porch, head in hands, looking distraught.
The kids came out and sat beside her.
It looked like she had to sell everything she
owned. Very sad. I almost wanted to buy something
but the only thing that was appealing was the kids'
bike and a Commodore 64. I didn't want to take
the kid's bike and I couldn't take the Commodore back
with me.

Maybe I'll buy some pants tomorrow.
I've been wearing the same clothes everyday here in
Regina. I'm starting to like it. I mean, of course I do
my laundry, it's just that I brought so little with me in
the way of summer clothing that I have to wear
a cycle of 4 t-shirts and I pair of pants over and over
again. I mean, I'm no slob, you know.
